CIC board meets Tuesday at Choice Brands

The Community Improvement Corporation Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday at Choice Brands of Ohio in Mingo Junction.

The meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m.

July’s meeting of the CIC board is scheduled for Tuesday, July 20 in Steubenville’s Belleview Park.

Progress Alliance, chamber will stress positives

The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Progress Alliance will partner with The Steubenville Herald Star to produce a full-color glossy magazine touting the quality of life in our area.

Both organizations will use this piece as the centerpiece of various marketing campaigns. The organizations expect to begin distributing the piece by the end of July.

We all know our county has challenges. However, we also know our county has tremendous assets—education, health care, parks, the river, festivals, events, concerts, golf courses, easy access to the big city, etc.  Successful communities in the 21^st century will be those that can map their assets and build a development strategy through an asset-based approach.  Simply put, our county needs to build on what we have today, creating additional capacity to do more tomorrow.

This new marketing piece will allow both organizations to feature the positives of our county as we work with many other organizations to build a better future. Collaborative efforts such as this again will demonstrate the commitment to community we have across the board in our county.

Julie Jones, special projects coordinator for The Herald Star, will coordinate sales for this magazine. Both the chamber and Progress Alliance hope area businesses will support this historic effort.

Initial soccer spectacular lands corporate sponsors

The Riverview Soccer Spectacular, planned for Oct. 9-10 in Jefferson County, this week announced numerous corporate sponsors for the event.

Sponsors include:  Trinity Health System, Steubenville Electrical LMCC, Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Progress Alliance, Steubenville Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Steubenville Kiwanis Club.

The Riverview Soccer Spectacular’s Host Hotel will be the Hampton Inn Steubenville and the Fort Steuben Mall is the Fun Zone sponsor.

The inaugural tournament is expected to attract 100 teams that will come from up to a three hour driving radius. An estimated 4,000 - 7,000 players, coaches, parents and spectators will visit the Ohio Valley area during the two day soccer tournament. The visitors are expected to impact the local economy by spending $400,000 - $600,000 during their stay.

All games will be played at two locations--the Jefferson Kiwanis Youth Soccer Club complex located in Cross Creek Township and Steubenville Catholic Central athletic complex.

Business plan boot camp planned for area

Progress Alliance, in partnership with the MCBI Regional Incubator for Entrepreneurs based in Zanesville, will host a Business Plan Boot Camp Series for residents of Jefferson, Harrison and Belmont counties.

The series will be held on Thursday, June 17 from 1-5 p.m., Friday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The program will be held at the Progress Alliance offices, 630 Market St. in Steubenville.

John Voorhies will serve as instructor for the series, designed to help entrants in the recent Big Idea Contest, develop their idea into a winning business. The series is open to anyone looking for help with developing a business plan.

Concert series to offer big band night

Tonight is Polka Night at the Historic Fort Steuben in downtown Steubenville.

The Denny Pasz Band will perform along with Tom Zielinsky. The performances will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Berkman Amphitheater.  Jazz Night will be observed on Thursday, June 17.

Progress Alliance golf outing is coming soon

Progress Alliance will hold its fourth annual Bridge Invitational Golf Classic on Friday, Aug. 6 at the Steubenville Country Club.

This year’s event has a new twist.  It will be billed as the Jefferson County Corporate Challenge.  The corporate team with the lowest score in the four-person scramble will win the opportunity to proudly display the brand new Bridge Invitational traveling trophy.  Members of the winning team will receive smaller replicas of the trophy along with other prizes.

The cost to enter a four-person team is $600. Several sponsorship opportunities also are available.  The event will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start to follow at 10 a.m.
